Long uninterrupted feeding of glycyrrhizin-containing liquorice can affect the body's natural cortisol and electrolyte balance over time. Cycling (typically 4 to 6 weeks on, 1 to 2 weeks off) keeps the supportive action of the herb without putting the body into a continuous state of adaptation.

At sensible feeding rates and within the cycled approach above, liquorice is generally well-tolerated. It is best avoided in horses with diagnosed high blood pressure or significant adrenal issues, which is why many owners reach for deglycyrrhizinated liquorice (DGL) for very long-term use.

Whole liquorice retains more of the broader supportive plant compounds, including those that act on the airways and adrenal pathway. DGL has the glycyrrhizin removed, which makes it suitable for very long-term continuous feeding but with a narrower action focused on the gastric mucosa.

Many owners do feed it alongside prescribed ulcer treatments as part of broader support, but always run the combination past your vet first. Liquorice supports the mucosal lining via a different mechanism to acid suppression, so the two can complement each other.

Glycyrrhizin can show up under certain anti-doping testing regimes. To stay safely within the rules, withdraw liquorice at least 7 days before competing and check the current prohibited substances list for your discipline.

Most owners report noticeable changes in girthiness, fussiness or training tension within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent feeding alongside good management; soaked feed, regular forage, and reduced training stress. Liquorice is supportive, not curative, and should sit alongside diagnosis-led care.
