Aniseed Powder:

Your Questions, Answered by Experts

Have questions about Aniseed Powder? You'll likely find your answers here

Is aniseed allowed under FEI, BE or racing rules?

Plain aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) is widely treated as a feed ingredient rather than a prohibited substance, but rules can change and aniseed sometimes appears in blends with other actives. If you compete affiliated, check the current prohibited substances list for your discipline and the full ingredient list of any blend you're feeding.

Is star anise the same thing, and is it safe to feed?

No. Star anise (Illicium verum) is a completely different plant from a different family. Some species of star anise are considered toxic to horses, so the two should not be used interchangeably. Always stick to true aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) for stable feeding.

Will aniseed make my horse "hot" or change its behaviour?

Aniseed is not a stimulant. Traditional sources describe it as gently settling on the digestive tract rather than energising. Horses sometimes look more enthusiastic at feed time simply because they like the flavour, which can be mistaken for raised energy but is really improved appetite.

How long does it take to notice a difference in coughing or breathing?

Aniseed works gently and cumulatively. Most owners report noticeable changes in mucus clearance and airway comfort over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily feeding, alongside good stable management like soaked hay, dust-free bedding and adequate ventilation.

Can aniseed be fed alongside other respiratory herbs like garlic, fennel or thyme?

Yes. Aniseed combines well with other classic respiratory herbs and is often layered with fennel for digestive crossover or with garlic for seasonal immune support. Introduce one new herb at a time so you can judge palatability and your horse's response.

Is aniseed suitable for laminitic or EMS horses?

Aniseed is naturally low in sugar and starch, so a measured daily amount is generally suitable for good-doers and metabolically sensitive horses. As with any new ingredient for an EMS or laminitis-prone horse, introduce it slowly and review the rest of the daily ration with your vet or nutritionist.
